Pullout characteristics of functionally graded and degraded adhesive anchors

Three-dimensional axisymmetric elasticity solutions for pull-out stresses in bonded anchors with spatially stiffness-varying adhesive are presented. A stiff rod embedded a semi-infinite rigid half-space through an bondlayer, representing general anchor problem is analyzed. The layer considered to have smoothly varying stiffness over length. Two cases of particular engineering relevance considered: (i) grading the bondlayer enhance performance while retaining critical length characteristics anchors, and (ii) modulus reduction degradation proximal loaded-end. Theoretical developed adopting stress function approach conjunction variational method that compare well 3D finite element (FE) results. Both theoretical FE results indicate maximum shear decreases 60% graded parameters here without warranting longer embedment In contrast, degraded reduces peaks significantly but warrants larger enable shear-dominated stress-transfer, disadvantageously loading embedded-end tension. design map showing required bondlines as fractional which bondline regarded addition, interfacial fracture behaviors tailored were examined analyses finding tailoring energy release rate has potential enhancing damage tolerance. findings study stiffness-tailored -degraded bondlayers redistribute field concomitant influence on stress-transfer debonding anchors.
